The impact of last year's strike by two major Hollywood trade unions on North American cinemas is becoming apparent at the beginning of the new year. After entering 2024, the North American cinema chain has withered, with only two new films released in January. Although the box office is not very good, it is already cheap to produce, at least not at the box office.
In February, the new film Argyle: secret Agent, starring Henry Carville, Bryce Dallas Howard and Sam Rockwell, was the first to hit the big screen. The spy comedy, made by Apple and released by Universal Pictures with a budget of $200m, brought no hope to North American theaters, grossing just $18 million in its opening week. The film will hit mainland theaters on February 23.
The film is the third film released by deep-pocketed Apple in theaters after "the Killer of the Moon" and "Napoleon" last year, each with an investment of more than $200 million. However, the first two films both grossed more than $20 million at the box office in their opening week, and "Flower Moon Killer" became a hit in the award season, while "Argyle" can only be described by word of mouth at the box office.
Argyle: secret Agent grossed just $18 million in its first week at 3605 theaters in North America, and the only good news was that it topped the North American box office chart last week. In addition to hitting the streets at the box office, the taste is also broken. The film received only 35% favorable reviews on rotten tomatoes, CinemaScore only gave the film a "C +" rating, and an IMDB score of only 6.1.
North American theaters fell out of the street, and the film also fell out of theaters outside North America, earning only $17.3 million outside North America and $35.3 million worldwide in its first week of release. For a movie with a production budget of up to $200 million, this box office is a bit too bad. Conservative estimates suggest that the film needs to earn at least $500 million at the box office to make a profit. Of course, for Apple, profit has never been the first consideration.
In other films, Jason Statham's "the Beekeeper" ranked third last week with $5.28 million at the box office, with a cumulative box office of $49 million in North America and more than $120 million worldwide. Wonka ranked in the top five at the North American box office for eight consecutive weeks and ranked fourth with $4.7 million last week. The film has grossed more than $200m in North American theaters and more than $570 million worldwide.
